Later, she sat up and arranged her hair. “I’m sorry I snapped at you about kissing me,” she whispered. “You’re a very fast thinker.”

“It was my pleasure,” he said, with a devious grin.

She smiled in spite of herself. “Very funny.”

“Do you play Gin Rummy? I have some cards.”

“Do you cheat?”

“Of course.”

“So do I,” she said, with a girlish giggle.

“This should be some game.” He stood, reached for his bag and produced a deck of cards, a note pad and pencil.

“You come prepared.”

“I was a boy scout.”

“And you still cheat?”

“I got a merit badge in it,” he said, shuffling the deck.

She giggled again. “Maybe I had better look at those cards.”

“Penny a point, OK?”

“Just deal. You think I’m going to gamble with someone who cheats?”

“That’s how I make my living. I buy expensive tickets on airplanes in hopes I’ll meet a rich heiress and play gin with her for a penny a point.”

They played for an hour while the plane gobbled up the miles, heading into the sunset. At the end of that time he was ahead.

“You do cheat.”

“I like to win.” He grinned and put the cards away. “You owe me 36 cents.”

“I don’t have any change. I’ll have to owe it to you.”

“Now there’s a likely story. I guess I’ll have to turn you over to my collection agency.”

Excerpt from Not Without Fear.

“No,” She murmured and struggled when his hand sought her breast. She tried to pull away but he was too strong and he kept fondling her, pinching her nipple through the cloth of her blouse. Despite herself, she felt a wild thrill in the pit of her stomach and she protested less and less. Her mind was a jumble of confused thoughts and she made only a slight protest when he started unbuttoning her shirtwaist. All the time he was fondling her breast, driving her into a world she had never dreamed existed. She was lying on her back when he undid the buttons of her chemise and pulled it back. Her soft white breasts came out of hiding and she moaned when he kissed them and took one in his mouth. By now she was on fire. Naked from the waist up, she pushed his head closer and dug her fingers into the skin of his neck and down his back while she gasped for breath. She was lost in a force so powerful she was unable to control herself and made no protest when his hand pulled up her skirt and began to trace the inner sides of her legs.

Still, it is first and foremost a love story--the story of a love that crossed the ocean and survived hardship, cultural differences and a very large family.
